DBT for adolescents and caregivers
We offer a comprehensive adolescent DBT program for ages 15-18. The adolescent DBT program requires at least one parent (or caregiver) to attend the group with the adolescent for the entirety of the program. The adolescent program runs for approximately 6 months.
This program involves:
1. Weekly individual therapy for adolescents
2. Weekly group skills training for adolescents and caregivers
3. Phone coaching is available between sessions for both adolescents and caregivers
The group focuses on mastering the following skills:
Mindfulness (accepting the present moment without judgment)
Distress tolerance (crisis survival skills)
Interpersonal effectiveness (setting limits and asking for what you need in an effective manner)
Walking the middle path (family communication skills, dialectics)
Emotion regulation (building positive experiences, treating vulnerabilities, tools to regulate strong emotions)
DBT has been adapted (Rathus & Miller, 2014) to treat adolescents struggling with intense emotion dysregulation, self-harm and suicidal behaviours, as well as their families. Numerous studies now demonstrate that DBT for adolescents is efficacious at reducing suicidal and non-suicidal self-harm behaviours and improving quality of life.
